UFC 193 Results

Holly Holm made history at UFC 193 by dethroning Ronda Rousey from her bantamweight reign, and she did so in spectacular fashion with a stone-cold knockout via head kick at 0:59 of Round 2.

It was shocking. Rousey was a huge favorite, and Holm was a relative newcomer to the UFC with only two fights in the promotion heading into this bout. Not only that but her first two fights in the UFC were criticized as dull and went to decisions.

So when Holm made Rousey look like a floundering amateur, bloodied her face, split her lip open and left her unconscious on the mat, it was almost entirely unexpected. Rousey had been so comprehensively dominant throughout her entire career; was anyone thinking about who she would face next if she lost?

Brazil triumphant at confederation cup

Brazil humbled the world and European champions Spain with a crushing 3-0 win in the Confederations Cup final, ending their opponents' three-year record run of 29 unbeaten competitive matches

Two goals from Fred, one either side of a stunning left-footed shot from Neymar, gave next year's World Cup hosts their fifth straight win in the competition as they clinched the trophy for the third time in a row.

Spain endured a miserable night with Sergio Ramos missing a penalty early in the second half and Gerard Pique sent off after 68 minutes for a lunge on his new Barcelona team-mate Neymar.

Fred put Brazil ahead after two minutes, Neymar added a majestic second just before half-time and the crowd erupted again when Fred made it 3-0 two minutes after the restart with his fifth goal of the competition.

The Maracana crowd taunted Spain and chanted "the giant is back" as Brazil overpowered Vicente del Bosque's team, whose last competitive defeat was against Switzerland at the 2010 World Cup.

Brazil started this competition just over two weeks ago with a third-minute goal against Japan and began this final in similar fashion with an even faster opener. Fred's second-minute hook-in, while he was on the ground, lacked the powerful beauty of Neymar's strike against Japan, but its impact was even more emphatic.

The crowd, who just minutes earlier had given a rousing rendition of the Brazil national anthem, raised the decibel levels even higher in celebration to settle Brazil's nerves, unsettle Spain's, and put the hosts firmly in control.

Oscar should have quickly doubled the lead but fired wide after eight minutes when Fred set him up with a clever backheel, while Paulinho went close in the 14th minute when he had Spain keeper Iker Casillas back-pedalling to keep his lobbed shot out.

Spain were clearly rattled by Brazil's rampaging start and they survived another early scare when defender Alvaro Arbeloa escaped with a yellow card when he was the last defender and sent Neymar tumbling. Spain, who usually dominate matches with their intricate midfield passing moves, showed patches of their usual self-assured control, but they also looked tired and leggy following Thursday's exhausting semi-final penalty shoot-out victory over Italy.

In contrast, Brazil, with Fred, Neymar and Paulinho looking fresh and powerful, continually had Spain on the back foot with a series of swift breaks, often initiated by David Luiz after some Spanish-style passing of their own.

David Luiz's name boomed through the cavernous ground four minutes before half-time when he raced back to clear a goalbound shot from Pedro just in front of the line, with Julio Cesar beaten.

Instead of finding themselves pegged back to 1-1, Brazil was 2-0 ahead within three minutes. Oscar provided the final pass to Neymar who smashed an unstoppable angled left-foot shot, past Casillas at his near post and into the roof of the net.

Spain were bidding to become the first team since Uruguay in the 1950 World Cup's decisive match to beat Brazil in a competitive international at the Maracana, but after falling behind so early, that never looked likely. Instead, Brazil fans left believing that coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, who won the World Cup with Brazil on 30 June 2002, could deliver a sixth world title to the Maracana in a year's time.

Where do Real Madrid do from Here ?

 According to a recent report from the Daily Mirror, Madrid made a formal bid to Tottenham for Bale that included a transfer fee and a number of players including Argentine midfielder Angel Di Maria. 

Still Tottenham reportedly turned down the Bernabeu’s latest overtures. Over the past few months, reports suggest Madrid have considered a transfer fee as high as £85 million for Bale.

Di Maria alone is worth roughly £30 million and he is under contract until 2018. At 25 years of age he could be a worthy substitute for Bale. Di Maria has scored 35 goals in all competitions since joining Madrid from Benefica in 2010.

However Madrid has been so transfixed on Bale, they might have allowed Ronaldo to slip off to his old club Manchester United. According to the Daily Star,United will reportedly meet with Ronaldo next week at Old Trafford and discuss his return to the club that he helped win three Premier League and one Champions League title.

New United boss David Moyes and club officials are willing to spend over £60 million for Ronaldo, and even offer him a £250,000-a week salary and endorsement deals with Chevrolet and Nike.

That same report from the Star states United could also get in the way of Madrid’s pursuit of Bale if they can’t land Ronaldo. United are willing to offer Tottenham £80 million for Bale, who reportedly may not want to extend his stay at White Hart Lane.

Madrid officials may also be in hot water with another Premier League club.Two days ago Spanish newspaper Marca published a report that claimed Madrid had come to terms with Liverpool striker Luis Suarez without so much as a transfer request, according to the Daily Telegraph. The Reds are reportedly furious, and even if the report of Suarez’s switch is true, they expect at least £40 million for him.

Suarez recently represented his native Uruguay against Brazil in the Confederations Cup earlier this week. Uruguay fell 2-1 to Brazil, but during the tournament Suarez netted three goals, including two scores in Uruguay’s 8-0 rout of Tahiti.

The 26-year-old has spent the last two years with Liverpool, making 77 appearances and totaling 38 goals.

Transfer Windows

  According to coughtoffside.com Higuain the Argentine will be leaving the Bernabeu this summer though and announced his intentions during a press conference after Madrid’s last game of the La Liga season. Arsenal are thought to be leading the race to sign the prolific striker and have submitted a £22 million bid to sign the Argentine international. A deal appears to be close with Arsenal hoping that they can secure personal terms. Juventus are also thought to be interested in signing Higuain and had a £18 million bid rejected by Real Madrid. Arsenal will hope that an improved bid isn’t on it’s way so that the Argentine is free to join them. If Higuain does sign for Arsenal as is expected, the Argentine would bring goals with him to the Emirates. Arsenal have lacked a proven goal scorer ever since Robin Van Persie left for Manchester United last season and Wenger will see Higuain as the answer to that problem. At 25, Higuain has plenty of time to get even better and this signing will show the rest of the Premier League that Arsenal mean business next season.

We been hearing a lot now about the protest in Brazil, Isn't it time for  Fifa to act? I personally think so. Football is said to be a sport that promote peace and stability, for the past weeks now that not the case in Brazil. Protesters have returned back to the streets demanding the increase in income better education, transport and health services, one day after President Dilma Rousseff proposed a wide range of actions to reform the country's political system. Fifa response has been to increase security for the confederation cup that is currently in progress, is this the right way to address this scenario, after all they are the governing body of football. I want to hear your views on the situation.
